Students into Schools
'Students into Schools' is an initiative which allows university students, from both Newcastle and Northumbria University, to become involved in teaching primary school children about farming and nutrition.
For the students, the initiative counts as a module towards their degree and is invaluable to those interested in careers in teaching.
The project is delivered by the students into the classrooms providing hands on experience of a school environment and working with children. |

By incorporating this module of work-based learning into the curriculum, the students are able to:
- Establish eating habits which include the consumption of fresh, healthy produce.
- To increase the consumption of fruit by children in the East End of Newcastle.
- To educate children about the links between food, physical activity and health.
Working in conjunction with East End Health a 'Students into Schools' information pack has been developed, for work with children at Key Stages 1 and 2.
Lesson plans and additional resources are included in the pack to offer a guide to students on how to successfully conduct a lesson, with the added bonus of giving variation to the sessions, and thereby keeping the children interested and engaged with the project.
Each student is welcome to adjust, and add to, the pack to suit their own ideas, giving each individual the freedom to make the project their own.
The topics covered by the scheme include:
- Fruit & Vegetables
- Wheel of Nutrition
- Supermarket Detectives
- Grow Your Own Cress
- Advertising
- Whole Grains
- Health
- Wildlife on a Farm
- Smoothies
- Milk
- Animal Farming
- What is Food?
