Healthy Ageing

Healthy Ageing

The majority of older people wish to remain healthy and live independent lives for as long as possible. With a high uptake of health promotion activities amongst older people and early returns for improved health, independence and well-being, it makes economic sense to invest in systems which promote health in old age.

East End Health aims to provide opportunities for individuals living in poverty, those with mobility issues and those who are socially isolated to enjoy active ageing.

Currently, East End Health has three projects aimed at providing our Healthy Ageing Scheme:

Out and About Stroke Group

Across England and Wales, 150,000 people per year will suffer from a stroke (Stroke Association, 2008). Of these, about one third will die within the first ten days, about one third will recover and the remaining third are likely to be left with a disability, requiring rehabilitation.

East End Health's Out and About Stroke Group helps to rehabilitate isolated stroke victims, alongside their families and carers.

Once a week, group members are collected from their homes and taken to venues of their choice to enjoy lunch, shop and enjoy leisure pursuits.

We are currently in the process of extending this service to 2 days per week.

Women's Art Group

The Women's Art Group is aimed at allowing individuals to experience art in a supportive and relaxed environment. The group is open to anyone living within the east end of Newcaslte and is free to join with all materials also being supplied by the charity. The group enjoy working on their own individual projects, taking part in taught classes and going out on trips to see local Arts and Crafts exhibitions.

Members are of a mixed age range and attend for a variety of reasons including respite from caring responsibilities, low mood, depression, isolation and anxiety.

Recently the group have had their work exhibited in a major art gallery in the centre of Newcastle and have also designed a mural for the Byker Metro Station.

In the future we would like to extend this scheme, allowing it to run on more days and to include more people.
